It is no easy task to describe the parish community found in St Julians. It is a complex and multi faceted community. Since its foundation in 1891 the parish community has evolved immensely in number and characteristics. This is also learnt from the fact that the members of the parish community in the late 50’s felt the need to build a larger church than the one they had at the time, the one known as Lapsi Church. In fact in 1961 a new Church started to be built in the time when Fr Guido Calleja was parish priest. The parish community started worshiping the Lord in their new church in 1968.

It is understood that since then the parish community has evolved in all respects. The original St Julians citizens are not as many as they where in the past. The community in St Julians today could be described as a very cosmopolitan community. The community is made up of people from all walks of life, diverse cultural, social and spiritual backgrounds. The community could also be said to be now a relatively middle aged community. However one may mention that the community celebrates an average of 81 baptisms yearly.

In the past few years the parish community has undergone an important structural growth. A number of parish commissions have been set up in concordance to the Maltese Church’s Synod Documents. These Commissions are of great help to the ongoing formation of the community itself. It is through these Commissions that the characteristics of the community are made known. It is also through the intensive work of these Commissions that the community can take life as it grows in the different aspects of its essence. The Commissions deal with particular areas which in themselves are the pillars on which the Community is built. These Commissions deal amongst other things with the Family, Liturgy, Cathecism and Diaconia.

The parish community is also visited regularly throughout the year by the only two full time priests of the parish, namely the Parish Priest and the Vice Parish Priest. These visits are held mainly in the six weeks after Easter Sunday when nearly 2,000 households are visited every year. The parish is made up of approximately 4,000 households. The priests also visit sick or housbound members of the parish every first Friday of the month. Family visits are also held prior to the celebration of the Sacraments of First Holy Communion (an average of 46 kids receive the Sacrament yearly) and Confirmation (an average of 50 kids receive the Sacrament yearly).

The parish community gathers together to celebrate the main Liturgical Celebrations in the Church calendar namely Christmas, Easter and also the parish feast which is celebrated on the last Sunday of August.

It is most likely that the parish community will continue to develop and evolve in the years to come. This will happen as the members of the community will be of a different type than the ones that form part of it in this day and age due to the different personalities and characteristics who will be the living protagonists of the community. Ultimately, the life of Community is the sole work of the Holy Spirit who is the prime mover of every Christian community. The Spirit, who is not a passive Spirit but a rather dynamic Spirit who moves within the community, stirs in the hearts of its members the necessary gifts and charisms which are necessary for the growth of each member within the community in order to serve it wholeheartedly and with love for God’s glory.
